Banana Republic, Old Navy and Gap Stores held a fashion show at the Poughkeepsie Galleria on Saturday, June 13, 2009, to benefit the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation and to honor survivors of breast cancer as models in the show.
“So far, we have collected $1,180 in cash and checks. GapInc. will match that amount and our volunteer hours will also be paid out to Miles of Hope,” said Diana Westerband, Manager of the Galleria Banana Republic.
“We are honored to be chosen by Gap Stores as the recipient of the proceeds from their Fashion Show,” stated Dana Effron, Co-Founder of Miles of Hope. “Even though I did not model in the show, many of my fellow breast cancer survivors made me proud by participating and giving Heidi Klum a run for her money!”
Funds raised are used to support programs for people affected by breast cancer in the Hudson Valley.
“We don’t fund research,” explained Executive Director Pari Forood. “The money we raise is used to fund a number of programs that attempt to lessen the burden of this disease on our friends, neighbors and families right here at home.”
The Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation received a check for $1850 from the proceeds from the Recession Chic Fashion Show held at Bella Luci Salon in Poughkeepsie with clothing from Elizabeth Boutique in Arlington. Both Rebecca Lee, president of Bella Luci Salon, and Beth Madsen, owner of Elizabeth Boutique organized the Fashion Show to highlight their establishments and to benefit the breast cancer foundation. The Fashion Show attracted over 100 people and a portion of the ticket price was donated to Miles of Hope which provides funding for support services for people affected by breast cancer in the eight counties of the Hudson Valley. The Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation has nominated two of its key volunteers for the Spirit of Dutchess Award.
Lisa Arnoff, Chairman of the Annual Spring Brunch for Miles of Hope, is a tireless and committed volunteer. She has planned the event for the past five years increasing the donation to the Foundation every year. Along with her committee, she begins in December organizing the brunch attended by over 400 people, the Silent Auction which raised over $50,000 this year, and all raffles and door prizes. By the date of the function – each year the brunch is the Sunday before Mother’s Day – she has had committee meetings, tastings, organizational events, and many mailings and e-mailings. She devotes her life to raising money through the brunch for five months. In 2009, the Annual Spring Brunch raised over $108,000 for support programs for people affected by breast cancer in the Hudson Valley.
Mary Schanz is the Chairman of Goals for Hope Women’s Soccer Tournament held at the LaGrange Soccer fields every August. An avid soccer player and soccer mom, Mary decided that the Hudson Valley needed to sponsor an event where everyone from former college players to soccer grandmothers could come and enjoy the exercise, friendly competition and fun. She organized the first Goals for Hope five years ago and will chair her sixth Goals on August 1, 2009. Each year, more and more women come to Dutchess County to play soccer and honor or remember a friend or colleague or family member touched by breast cancer. Last year over 600 women competed and over 1000 spectators came to watch. Along with her committee, she organizes three different tournaments depending on ability, a concession stand, a kid’s soccer clinic, an obstacle course for the youngest fans, and the infamous Granny’s Game.
Miles of Hope would not exist without volunteers. Both of these women also serve on the Board of Directors lending their expertise and support to the administration of the Foundation. They are an example of the best that leadership and volunteerism have to offer in our community and Miles of Hope salutes them.
The Spirit of Dutchess Award is sponsored by the United Way of Dutchess County.
Everyone who participated in the Family Fun Run on May 9 is invited to view the Fun Run times posted on the Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club website. What a great day! Links to hundreds of photos from this Miles of Hope fundraiser are on our photo page.
