Honoree Named for Hudson Valley Breast Cancer Walk
The 13th Annual Hudson Valley Community Walk for Breast Cancer will take place at James Baird State Park in Pleasant Valley, NY on October 4, 2015, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Hundreds are expected to join breast cancer survivors, their families and friends to honor and remember all those affected by the disease in the Hudson Valley. The Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, which organizes the event, is a regional charity with a mission to fund support services and outreach for people affected by breast cancer within the eight counties of the Hudson Valley, NY.
“This is our 13th Walk,” explained Miles of Hope Executive Director, Pari Forood. “It is a 5K and some people run, some walk with their dog or their stroller, but most walk with friends and family on what will probably be a beautiful fall day in one of our loveliest state parks.”
This year, the Walk honors a Hudson Valley icon of the restaurant and hospitality business, Mary Bonura, who lives in Orange County but whose family business, the Bonura Hospitality Group, boasts restaurants and hotels all over the Hudson Valley.
Mary McClurg Bonura came to Newburgh with her family in 1958. After graduating from Newburgh Free Academy, she went to work as a lab technician at St. Luke’s Hospital. In August of 1964, she married Joseph Bonura and, starting in 1972 with their first Perkins Pancake House on North Plank Road in Newburgh, they created what is now known as the Bonura Hospitality Group, boasting restaurants, catering facilities, hotels and other hospitality outlets throughout the Hudson Valley.
She has served on numerous boards and logged countless hours as a volunteer. She ascended to President of the Board of Managers of the former Amos & Sara Holden Home, served as President of the St. Luke’s Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, and is a founding member and past President of the Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties Auxiliary. She is a 20-year breast cancer survivor and a member of the Board of Directors of the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation.
