Goals for Hope Women’s Soccer Tournament 8/04/14

Saturday, August 2, 2014 marks the day for the 11th annual Goals for Hope Women’s Soccer Tournament benefiting the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation.

The tournament will be held at the LaGrange Soccer fields with team check-in beginning at 7:15 a.m. Games will begin at 8:00 and spectators are welcome. There will be a concession stand with lunch, drinks and snack items throughout the day — all proceeds go to Miles of Hope.

Tournament Co-Chairman Mary Schanz said: “We have been overwhelmed by the response from teams from all over the northeast United States. What started as a friendly competition to benefit the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation has turned into a large scale event promoting health and exercise for women of all ages and athletic ability.”

“The best part of the competition is that it brings the soccer moms onto the field!” said tournament Co-Chairman Amanda Tierney. “They’ve been sitting on the side lines cheering for their kids, now it’s time for the kids to cheer for them!”

The Tournament Chairman announced: “2014 Goals for Hope tournament will be held in honor of Christine Galloway. Christine is a two-time breast cancer survivor. She and her husband, Robert, have been supporters of the Beacon Soccer Club since its inception in 1978. The Galloways are active, selfless community volunteers, and grandparents of soccer players.  Christine has always been a  Goals for Hope active supporter, even taking to the field herself for a couple of years!   Please join us on Saturday, August 2, to honor this wonderful woman!”

More than 700 women will be competing at four different levels of play.  “All of the sports competitions that we sponsor are designed to be a friendly message emphasizing the benefits of exercise to all women. Goals for Hope Women’s Soccer Tournament is not about winning or losing but about participating and recognizing that we can be proactive about our health,” explained Cathy Varunok, co-founder of Miles of Hope and a Goals for Hope participant.

Goals for Hope Honoree

luanneWe are excited to announce our honoree for Goals for Hope 2013! Luanne Maley McDonough grew up in Spackenkill as one of 10 children. She is a wonderful wife, mother, sister, and friend. She has spent countless hours both on the soccer sidelines and on the field playing herself for more than 20 years. Both Luanne and her husband were some of our first GFH volunteers. She has been with our tournament since 2004. Luanne is a breast cancer survivor. In May 2012, two tumors were discovered at her annual physical exam. An MRI and biopsies followed. These revealed another tumor and resulted in her diagnosis of bilateral multi-centric infiltrating ductal carcinoma stage two. Post treatment, she is ready to don the cleats and play again in this year’s Goals for Hope tournament! We look forward to honoring her!
