Miles of Hope, the Hudson Valley’s only local breast cancer foundation, announced today the awarding of scholarships in 4 counties, to high school seniors whose lives have been affected by breast cancer.
“High school seniors in Dutchess, Ulster, Orange and Westchester Counties received scholarships for college,” explained Executive Director Pari Forood.
“Their academic performance, extracurricular activities and breast cancer volunteer activities are exemplary. Plus their essays showed us how their lives were affected by breast cancer sometimes in heartbreaking ways with the loss of a loved one,” she continued.
Miles of Hope Scholarships:
- General Scholarship: Scholarship awarded to students affected by breast cancer.
- Betty Benecke Memorial Scholarship: Students meeting the Miles of Hope scholarship criteria and pursuing a career in the arts.
- Betty Howard Memorial Scholarship: Students meeting the Miles of Hope scholarship criteria and who plan to pursue a healthcare related field of study.
- Michael Benecke Memorial Scholarship: Students meeting the Miles of Hope scholarship criteria and reflect Michael’s values of the importance of higher education and social justice.
“My family has endowed these 3 scholarships in memory of my mother, Betty Benecke; my sister, Betty Howard; and my brother, Michael Benecke,” said Cathy Varunok, Co-Founder of Miles of Hope. “My sister and mother both had breast cancer and they are the reason for starting Miles of Hope with Co-Founder Dana Effron. Everytime we help a student who has been touched by this disease, I think of my family and how proud they would be to know that we are making a difference in young lives.”

The
Miles of Hope Annual Spring Brunch is
Sunday, May 3, at the Grandview in Poughkeepsie. In its 11th year, the event will honor Marist College with a capacity crowd.
“Every year, this event gets better and better with more people, more excitement — it is the must-attend Spring event in the Hudson Valley!” explained Executive Director Pari Forood. “We are thrilled to be honoring Marist College this year for all they have done for us throughout our 11 year history,” Ms. Forood added.
Lisa Arnoff, Chairman of the Miles of Hope Board of Directors and Co-Chairman of the Annual Spring Brunch expressed her excitement at the donated items in the Silent Auction: “Jewelry from nationally-recognized designers, as well as Tiffany just in time for Mother’s day! We have NY Giants tickets, sold out concert tickets, vacation houses, theater tickets and a grand prize raffle of a trip for 2, with air fare and hotel to Aruba.”
“The Brunch attracts breast cancer survivors, friends, family and colleagues,” explained Miles of Hope co-founder Cathy Varunok. “It is a feel-good event allowing everyone to laugh and have fun while remembering why Miles of Hope exists as the only regional breast cancer foundation in our area – to fund support services for people affected by breast cancer within the 8 counties of the Hudson Valley, NY.”

In honor of Mother’s Day, and the upcoming Annual Spring Brunch on May 3, at the Grandview honoring all those affected by breast cancer in the Hudson Valley, the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation is honoring mothers by highlighting them on their website.
“Mother’s are the backbone of our culture,” stated mother, and daughter (and Executive Director of Miles of Hope) Pari Forood. “We decided to honor them this Spring on our website and the response has been great!”
“We opened it up to the entire Miles of Hope family and we were flooded with the most heartwarming photos of mothers and daughters,” she explained.
Mother, mother in law, daughter, and daughter in law (and Miles of Hope Brunch Chairman) Lisa Arnoff explained why honoring mothers is so important to the Foundation: “breast cancer affects everyone–mothers, daughters and even a small percentage of men. When you are in treatment as my mother was, support comes from everywhere but especially your family; and mothers are at the heart of the family.”
Miles of Hope funds support services for people affected by breast cancer within the eight counties of the Hudson Valley. The Annual Spring Brunch with a silent auction, raffle for a trip to Aruba, and door prizes is on May 3, at the Grandview in Poughkeepsie.
The 10th Annual Spring Brunch for the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation at the Grandview in Poughkeepsie is this Sunday, May 4, from 11- 2:00.
“This year we have a special program planned in honor of our 10th Anniversary,” explained Miles of Hope Executive Director Pari Forood. “We will be awarding our scholarship recipients at the Brunch and honoring them and their parents.”
2014 Scholarship Recipients:
- Darren Pikul, Highland – Highland High School- Onondaga Community College
- Kayley Spinella, Poughkeepsie – Arlington High School – Betty Howard Scholarship Recipient – Kings College, Brooklyn
- Kaitlin Pearson, East Chatham – Chatham High School – Syracuse University
- Claire Mulpeter, Red Hook – Red Hook High School – Ithaca College
“Each scholarship recipient will receive $3000 toward their college expenses,” explained Miles of Hope co-Founder Cathy Varunok. “The Scholarship Committee made up of current and retired educators and community leaders chose these high school seniors from a list of very qualified candidates.”
“There will also be a special 10th Anniversary Video highlighting Miles of Hope volunteers and programs,” added co-Founder Dana Effron. “This video will enable us to share with the 500 supporters in our audience footage from many of our events and best wishes from the participants, volunteers, and organizers.”
“None of this would be possible without our extraordinary sponsors!” reminded Brunch Chairwoman Lisa Arnoff of Arnoff Moving and Storage. “Without Health Quest, Arnoff Moving and Storage, Premier Medical Group, BMW of the Hudson Valley, Dana and Ira Effron, D’Arcangelo and Co, Half Time Beverage, Hudson Cadillac Buick GMC, and Hudson River Fruit Distributors/The Albinder Family, we would not be able to help people in the Hudson Valley affected by breast cancer.”

The 10th Annual Miles of Hope Spring Brunch will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2014, at the Grandview in Poughkeepsie, NY.
In 2013, Miles of Hope raised more than $450,000 to fund support programs in the Hudson Valley. Nearly one-third of that was raised at the Annual Spring Brunch. In its ten-year history of funding support services for people affected by breast cancer, Miles of Hope has given away more than $1,000,000.
