Community Walk for Breast Cancer Kickoff

2014
10YearsStampWednesday, 9/10, noon at the Poughkeepsie Journal Building courtyard, (inside lobby if raining) community leaders will help the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation to kick-off upcoming Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October) and the Community Walk for Breast Cancer on October 5, at James Baird State Park (see milesofhope.org/old for details).

“County Executive Marc Molinaro, State Senator Terry Gipson, Dutchess County Health Commissioner Dr. Kari Reiber, Poughkeepsie Mayor John Tkazyik and Walk Chairman and Poughkeepsie Journal Publisher Barry Rothfeld will speak briefly about breast cancer and the importance of preventive care,” explained Miles of Hope Executive Director Pari Forood. “The message this year is that all of us can take steps to reduce our cancer risk. Adopting a healthy lifestyle by eating more fruits and vegetables and exercising regularly are essential to reducing the risk of cancer,” she added.

Senator Terry Gipson will present Miles of Hope co-founders Dana Effron and Cathy Varunok with a special NYS Senate proclamation at the event.

“After the short remarks by our elected and appointed officials, the County Executive and I will walk around the block with city and county employees to show our solidarity for the promotion of exercise,” Ms. Forood stated. “We invite the press to join us!”

The 12th annual Community Walk for Breast Cancer will be held Sunday, October 5, 2014 at James Baird State Park in Pleasant Valley, NY.

The Walk for Hope Challenge

2014
“Hi, I’m Dana Effron, co-founder of Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation. We’re celebrating our 10th anniversary, and I have a challenge for you. On October 5th, we’ll be walking a 5K at James Baird State Park.

“Everyone who registers, here’s your challenge:

“Raise a hundred dollars. Ask ten friends to support you. And then ask one of them, or all of them, to take the challenge too. We can raise a lot of money, and raise a lot of support and care for family and friends affected by breast cancer in [New York's] Hudson Valley. Can’t wait to see you on October 5th.”

Team SFH/Molloys Raises $10,000 for Miles of Hope!

2013

SFH-Molloy2013Team St. Francis Hospital and Molloy’s Pharmacy raised $10,000 for the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation in honor of the Community Walk for Breast Cancer at James Baird State Park on 10/6/13.  Flanking Miles of Hope ED in the photo are from l-r: Mary Luvera, SFH Cancer Center; PF (pink shirt, blue skirt); SFH Physical Therapist Dori Kerner; SFH Human Resources, Wendy Devens.

“Money keeps pouring in from the extraordinarily generous employees of these two iconic Hudson Valley organizations,” said Miles of Hope Executive Director, Pari Forood. She continued: “At the Walk, St Francis/Molloy’s Team was the largest team with 74 walkers and they raised the most money as well. We are indebted to all of these committed and motivated fund raisers; they understand how important our mission is and they help us directly by allowing Miles of Hope to support people in treatment for breast cancer right here in the Hudson Valley.”

SFH Human Resources Director Wendy Devens explained that the funds were raised throughout September in preparation for the Walk: “Money was raised through a lottery basket raffle, bake sales, candy sales, condo raffle, walkers & general donations,” she explained. “Every year we get ready for the Miles of Hope Walk and SFH employees get involved by creating various ways to raise money. So many of us have been affected directly by breast cancer that it is natural for SFH and Molloy’s to want to help.”
