Terpsichore the Dancerschool will host a Health Fair on Sunday, October 28, 2012, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm, at their studio, 74 MillPond Parkway, Monroe, NY [map].

The staff at at Terpsichore feel that Dance is good for the mind, body & soul.  Let’s come together as a community and share ways to help lead stronger, healthier lives.

Free & open to the public — bring the kids! Dance lessons from Terpsichore Company members, a Dino‐Dig, pink hair extensions, sticker fun, face painting, arts & crafts and much more!!

Peer-to-Peer Program for Breast Cancer Patients

Peer-to-Peer Program The Miles of Hope Peer-to-Peer Program allows breast cancer patients to connect with trained cancer survivors. This program is especially important for those newly diagnosed with breast cancer, but anyone with a breast cancer patient in their lives can utilize the peer-to-peer program.

If you would like to speak with a breast or ovarian cancer survivor, please call 914-962-6402 or 800-532-4290. A peer councellor is on staff Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm to provide individualized support.

This program focuses on individual needs and personalized support, providing information and resources to breast cancer patients and to their caregivers, spouses, children, family and friends, either on the phone or in the Yorktown Heights office.

Medical Gap Care Fund for Breast Cancer Patients

The Medical Gap Care Fund was established to help individuals who reside in one of the eight counties of the Hudson Valley, NY, and are in treatment for breast cancer with a financial emergency not covered by insurance. The program is funded by Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation and administered by social service agencies in the eight counties of the region.

An article in the Yorktown and Cortlandt Region blog describes grants made by Miles of Hope in support of a program by Support Connection of Yorktown, NY.

Peer Counseling ProgramSupport Connections provides a program called One-on-One Peer Counseling, which offers free, personalized, confidential support and education to people affected by breast and ovarian cancer, either on the phone or at their Yorktown Heights office. Miles of Hope provides partial funding for this program.

African Americans and Breast Cancer Lecture

Miles of Hope co-founder Cathy Varunuk will speak at the Beulah Baptist Church in Poughkeepsie on Sunday, October 24 at the 8 AM services and again at the 11 AM services. She will have updates related to breast cancer and specifically how it affects the African American population.
She will be providing facts and statistics about breast cancer in the African American population as well as local support services for those diagnosed.
All are welcome!

Here at Miles of Hope, when October rolls around, we say “Happy Breast Cancer Awareness Month!” It has become a celebration in this country of all survivors and their successful treatment and all of the research and funding that has made new technology part of the cure. We salute nurses, doctors, technicians, scientists and biomedical engineers for their diligence and nurturing. And we remember with fondness and regret those who died of this terrible disease.

Local Group Funds Support Programs for Breast Cancer Patients

Imagine the unimaginable. You find a lump in your breast.  You go to the doctor and it is confirmed through testing that you have breast cancer. Now what?

According to the American Cancer Society, excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, accounting for more than 1 in 4 cancers diagnosed in the US. In 2008, there were 182,460 new cases of breast cancer in women in the United States. The 5 year relative survival rate for breast cancer in the localized stage (cancer that has not spread to other sites in the body) is 98%. The earlier the cancer is diagnosed, the more successful the treatment.
