The Walk Results are Finally In!

teamshariThe results from the 2015 Hudson Valley Community Walk for Breast Cancer are in and the big winners are Barry Rothfeld and Team Shari! Barry Rothfeld, publisher emeritus of the Poughkeepsie Journal, raised $3,500 for his daughter’s team, Team Shari, which won for team with the most walkers at 53.

The team which raised the most was Peachy Keen at $6,300 and Team Shari was a close second with $5,400 with Team Boobylicious coming in 3rd with $5,100. Rounding out the list is Rockin’ Rays of Hope with $2,200, and Spack for a Cure with $1,840.

“Thank you to everyone who participated and especially to those who decided to go above and beyond the call by their stellar fund raising!” exclaimed Miles of Hope Executive Director, Pari Forood.

Second place in individual fund raising was Emmy Josephs with $2,600 raised. Emmy is a former Walk Honoree and a Miles of Hope star volunteer. Third place goes to Jasmin Alvarez with $2,400. Special thanks to Renee Audette ($1,580) and Debbie Zocchi ($1,240).

Teams with the most walkers were Team Shari (53), Team Angela (46), Rockin’ Rays of Hope (44), Team Boobylicious (23), and Pinky Swears (15).

Pink Pumpkins Inspire Seniors

pinkpumpkinsThe senior citizens at the Manor at Woodside in Poughkeepsie decided they would decorate and sell pink pumpkins in honor of October, Breast Cancer Awareness month.

“Not only are the residents of the Manor creative, they are also very philanthropic,” explained Manor at Woodside sales leader Alisha Libruk. “It was important to them to have a fund raiser for breast cancer awareness and what better way than to decorate pumpkins!” she added.
“This is the second year the residents of Manor at Woodside have done this for us,” said Miles of Hope Executive Director, Pari Forood. “It is such a pleasure for me to meet with them and thank them for their initiatives on our behalf.”

“October brings out the best in people. I have been all over the 8 counties of the Hudson Valley, meeting with people and speaking at large gatherings to promote the benefits of early detection and a healthy lifestyle. Everyone wants to help us spread the message,” Ms. Forood said.

Pink Kiss, October 10, 2015

headThe third annual Pink Kiss event, in support of Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, will be held on Saturday, October 10 2015, hosted by Lorraine Tyne & Sparkle My Head Scarves at 161 Main Street in Beacon from 6 PM – 9 PM. Highlights of the fundraiser will include:

8th Annual Community Friends Craft Show on Oct. 17, 2015

The 8th Annual “Community Friends” Craft Show, in support of Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2015, 10 am – 4 pm, at the Town of Poughkeepsie Senior Center, 14 Abes Way (off South Gate Drive) [map].

Gorgeous gifts from more than 20 handcraft artisans will be available for purchase, just in time to avoid the holiday rush! There will be a “Think Pink” Resale Bargains Boutique on the gazebo deck. Enjoy author book signings, blood pressure screenings by oncology nurses, and a professional massage therapist. Try your luck in the Giant Pumpkin Weight Contest, drawings for prizes every 15 minutes and the Shoppers’ Grand Prize Drawing!

Refreshments for sale will include Cool Bus Cafe Catering and delicious home-baked desserts.

Admission donations (adults $3, seniors $2) go to benefit Miles of Hope.

4th Annual Cosmos & Cupcakes For Causes A Real Sweetie

This 4th annual “sweet” event to benefit three great charities, The Greater Hudson Valley Family Health Center, Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, and the Littman Cancer Center at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital was held on Tuesday evening, June 2. Nearly 200 people gathered at Anthony’s Pier 9 to watch cupcake contestants crowned and extravagant mixologists making creative “spirited” cosmos. By popular demand guests SAMPLED the cupcakes this year, enjoyed a light supper followed by a fantastic program that told the “Story” of the ties that bind the organization and the people they serve.

Regina McGrade, VP of Marketing and Development at the Family Health Center, the events lead and founding agency shared; “The committee teams from each charity are very proud of the collaborative spirit in producing this event and working with each other every day for the health and wellbeing of our communities. The collaborations also included the SLC Auxiliary, The Friends of the Family Health Center, the students at The Nora Cronin Presentation Academy for production – painting over 200 clay pots (cupcakes).”

The event has raised nearly $50k for EACH charity to date.

The Best in Show winning cupcake this year was “Raspberry Patch” by Tina James.

The Fan Favorite AND Second Place cupcake was “Southern Charm” by Gwen DeSousa, a 2013 winner of this event.

Third Place was “Tres Leche” by Atia Harvin and Richelle Winston

The reigning Cosmo Champion (Pineapple Upside Down Cake 2014), Allison Sutherland was recognized for her 2015 Cherry Vanilla Cosmo.

The second annual Dutchess Dragon Boat Race & Festival will be held Saturday, July 25, 2015,  at the boathouse of the Hudson River Rowing Association in Poughkeepsie, NY [map]. Friendly competition between teams of paddlers on the Hudson River. Join a team or form your own (16-20 paddlers plus a drummer).

On the waterfront: Asian Cultural Festival with live music, events, arts and artisans, and food vendors. Participants and spectators will enjoy a fun day of recreational racing, food, music, and views of our magnificent river. The Miles of Hope Annual Spring Brunch is Sunday, May 3, at the Grandview in Poughkeepsie. In its 11th year, the event will honor Marist College with a capacity crowd.

“Every year, this event gets better and better with more people, more excitement — it is the must-attend Spring event in the Hudson Valley!” explained Executive Director Pari Forood. “We are thrilled to be honoring Marist College this year for all they have done for us throughout our 11 year history,” Ms. Forood added.

Lisa Arnoff, Chairman of the Miles of Hope Board of Directors and Co-Chairman of the Annual Spring Brunch expressed her excitement at the donated items in the Silent Auction: “Jewelry from nationally-recognized designers, as well as Tiffany just in time for Mother’s day! We have NY Giants tickets, sold out concert tickets, vacation houses, theater tickets and a grand prize raffle of a trip for 2, with air fare and hotel to Aruba.”

“The Brunch attracts breast cancer survivors, friends, family and colleagues,” explained Miles of Hope co-founder Cathy Varunok. “It is a feel-good event allowing everyone to laugh and have fun while remembering why Miles of Hope exists as the only regional breast cancer foundation in our area – to fund support services for people affected by breast cancer within the 8 counties of the Hudson Valley, NY.”

Family Fun Run to Benefit Local Breast Cancer Programs

funrunThe 12th annual Miles of Hope Family Fun 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Tymor Park in the Town of Union Vale will benefit the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, a local foundation to fund support services for people affected by breast cancer within the eight counties of the Hudson Valley.

Lori Cassia Decker, chairman and organizer stated: “This event has raised $193,000 for Miles of Hope since its 2004 inaugural event. We have been honored to provide Miles of Hope with funds to help people in our community who are affected by breast cancer.”  Registration for the event is from 8:00-9:00 on April 25, at Tymor Park.  Kids Race (ages 4-12) – 10:00 a.m.  5K for all ages – 10:30 a.m.  “There will be face painting, music, raffles, and Miles of Hope merchandise. We encourage everyone to form a team. You can walk, run, or just be there to join the fun and cheer on the participants!” Mrs. Decker explained.

“This year the Family Fun Run honors two courageous women,” explained Mrs. Decker. “Michi Decker was diagnosed in February of 2014 and has been in treatment ever since. She has volunteered at this event every year, and she is an inspiration to everyone affected by breast cancer in the Hudson Valley.
“Connie Haven is another strong woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002. She is a survivor and encourages anyone going through breast cancer treatment to stay positive and keep fighting,” Mrs. Decker said.
“With the support of family, friends and activities, I’ve been able to stay on a positive path. Sports, movies and books have been excellent outlets,” explained Mrs. Haven.
