2011 Walk Honoree Announced – Lucille Chiocchi

2011
Lucille Chiocchi

Lucille Chiocchi, Honoree, 2011 Community Walk for Breast Cancer

The Miles of Hope 9th Annual Community Walk for Breast Cancer will be October 2, 2011 at James Baird State Park off of the Taconic State Parkway in Pleasant Valley, NY, starting at 9 am. All proceeds from the Walk benefit the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation which funds support services for people affected by breast cancer in the eight counties of the Hudson Valley.

Lucille Chiocchi has been a breast cancer survivor since December 1998 with a re-diagnosis in October 2010. Since her original diagnosis, she has been an active fundraiser for breast cancer. Lucille has been involved with Miles of Hope since the inaugural walk in 2003, logging 100 miles. Since that time, she has remained active in the Community Walk for Breast Cancer as well as the Annual Spring Brunch each May. Because of Lucille’s association and love of Miles of Hope, her daughter, a local florist, has been a volunteer and donor to the Brunch for 5 years. Miles of Hope is very grateful to have Lucille as an active participant in our organization.

Lucille was born in the Bronx, and has lived in Dutchess County for 38 years. She has been a successful realtor for 33 years and has been involved with the Dutchess County Board of Realtors and the Women’s Council of Realtors.

In her free time Lucille enjoys speed walking, gardening and spending time with her grandson.

When asked about her breast cancer experience Lucille said: “Life is what you make it. I feel you have to have hope and love.”

Miles of Hope is thrilled to be honoring Lucille at our 9th Annual Community Walk for Breast Cancer on Sunday October 2, 2011.

Miles of Hope Annual Appeal

2010

Dear Miles of Hope Family,

As we approach the holiday season at the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, we realize that we have so much to be thankful for.

In six years, after raising over $2.5 million dollars, we have awarded over $1,000,000 in grants. We thought you might like to know where some of the money went.

Co-Founder Cathy Varunok (center) with Miles of Hope Scholarship winners

Over 50 scholarships have been given to high school seniors whose lives have been affected by breast cancer.

Six social service agencies help us to administer the Medical Gap Care Fund in eight counties. This fund was created to provide funding for families who are either under-insured or have a financial emergency while in treatment. To date we have helped thousands of people by granting over $700,000.

We are currently partnering with Vassar Brothers Medical Center, St. Francis Hospital, St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, Benedictine Hospital and others to provide important complementary medicine programs for people in treatment for breast cancer.

A Peer-to-Peer program counsels the recently diagnosed who need a voice, an encouraging word or non-medical advice, from trained breast cancer survivors, thanks to Miles of Hope.

None of these programs would be possible without your continued support and generosity. To that end, we would welcome your holiday gift. If you want to fund a particular program please note this with your donation.

Thank you for helping us to help as many people as possible. You can make your donation either online at MilesofHope.org or by check to:

We salute nurses, doctors, technicians, scientists and biomedical engineers for their diligence and nurturing. And we remember with fondness and regret those who died of this terrible disease.

When we started the Foundation in 2004, we decided to focus (more…)

(L-R) Dana Effron, Lynne Kopac, Pari Forood and Cathy Varunok- Greater Southern Dutchess Chamber of Commerce Power of Empowerment Award 2010

Last night at the Greater Southern Dutchess Chamber of Commerce Empowerment Awards, Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation founders were honored for their commitment to the community and to the women of the Hudson Valley.

Local breast cancer survivor and IBM employee Lynne Kopac nominated the two women because she felt they embodied the concept of empowerment.

“I help to organize the Family Fun Run every year and I see Cathy and Dana’s dedication to this foundation and to helping people with breast cancer,” Kopac said

“We are just thrilled,” Effron explained, “first to have Lynne, a good friend and great volunteer, nominate us and then to be recognized by your peers as empowering is such an honor for us.”

Miles of Hope sponsors 5 events every year – Hoops for Hope Women’s Basketball Tournament, The Annual Spring Brunch, Family Fun Run, Goals for Hope Women’s Soccer Tournament and the Community Walk for Breast Cancer.

“Each year we try to emphasize exercise, good nutrition and general attention to health as essential to lessening the risk for breast cancer,” Mrs. Varunok said, “helping women become healthier is definitely empowering!”

Local Foundation Honored for Support of Cancer Survivors

2010
Cathy Varunok and Pari Forood

Cathy Varunok, Co-Founder and Pari Forood, Executive Director, accepted the Spirit of Community Award presented to the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation

THE MILES OF HOPE BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION, based in Dutchess County but serving all 8 counties of the Hudson Valley, was selected by Support Connection, Inc. (Westchester County), a not-for-profit organization that provides free, confidential services to those affected by breast and ovarian cancer, as a recipient of their 2010 SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD. Support Connection presented their Spirit Awards during their Thirteenth Annual Gala and Silent Auction, held on April 10, 2010 at Colonial Terrace in Cortlandt Manor, NY. More than 350 people attended to celebrate the honorees who were selected for contributing to the organization’s mission by providing inspiration, time, talent or other resources.

Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation is a non-profit, 501 (c)(3) public charity started in 2004 by Dana Effron and Cathy Varunok, who saw a need for increased services for people with breast cancer in the community. Both women remain actively involved with the Foundation today. In addition to numerous volunteers, they are joined by Pari Forood, who has been the Foundation’s Executive Director since its inception. The mission of the Foundation is to provide funding to non-profit organizations for support services and outreach for people affected by breast cancer in the Hudson Valley, New York (Columbia, Dutchess, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, and Orange, Ulster and Greene counties). The Foundation holds numerous events and fundraising activities throughout the year to accomplish their goals, and they provide grants, scholarships, and other funds to support their mission. To learn more, visit http://www.milesofhope.org.

Miles of Hope was presented with Support Connection’s Spirit of Community Award because they have given grant funding to support the group’s services for women with breast cancer every year since 2004. The Support Connection programs funded by Miles of Hope have included community outreach, support groups, wellness classes and most significantly, Peer-to-Peer Counseling. Peer Counselors are women who have experienced cancer and are trained to offer support, assistance and education to other women with cancer, their families and friends. As a result of continued support from the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, Support Connection’s Peer Counseling program has been able to meet the growing need for this essential service. Support Connection’s most recent funding from Miles of Hope was a $10,000 grant received in January 2010.

SUPPORT CONNECTION, INC. is a 501 (C) (3) not-for-profit organization that provides free, confidential support services and programs to people affected by breast and ovarian cancer. Founded in 1996, Support Connection is based in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., but through their toll-free hotline (funded by Miles of Hope) and website they serve people throughout the country.
