Nancy Miller and Ellen Staino, Walk 2011 Organizers

To the Editor of the Poughkeepsie Journal,

As co-chairwomen of the Miles of Hope Community Walk held Oct. 2 at James Baird State Park, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the sponsors, volunteers and supporters of this very successful event. This year there were more people who came out and walked than ever before. We are thrilled to report the event raised over $84,000!*

We can’t begin to thank everybody involved by name in this letter, the list would be too long; and we would be afraid we would leave someone out. But to the many people who supported this event, we are extremely humbled and grateful for your generosity.

Your support allows the mission of the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation to continue. All funds raised in the Hudson Valley are used to support programs in the Hudson Valley. Some of the programs include the Medical Gap Care Fund, scholarships for college-bound seniors, Peer-to-Peer Program and complementary medicine (massage therapy, reiki, exercise/dance). To all who supported the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation Community Walk we say thank you, thank you, thank you!

2011 Walk Honoree Announced – Lucille Chiocchi

2011
Lucille Chiocchi

Lucille Chiocchi, Honoree, 2011 Community Walk for Breast Cancer

The Miles of Hope 9th Annual Community Walk for Breast Cancer will be October 2, 2011 at James Baird State Park off of the Taconic State Parkway in Pleasant Valley, NY, starting at 9 am. All proceeds from the Walk benefit the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation which funds support services for people affected by breast cancer in the eight counties of the Hudson Valley.

Lucille Chiocchi has been a breast cancer survivor since December 1998 with a re-diagnosis in October 2010. Since her original diagnosis, she has been an active fundraiser for breast cancer. Lucille has been involved with Miles of Hope since the inaugural walk in 2003, logging 100 miles. Since that time, she has remained active in the Community Walk for Breast Cancer as well as the Annual Spring Brunch each May. Because of Lucille’s association and love of Miles of Hope, her daughter, a local florist, has been a volunteer and donor to the Brunch for 5 years. Miles of Hope is very grateful to have Lucille as an active participant in our organization.

Lucille was born in the Bronx, and has lived in Dutchess County for 38 years. She has been a successful realtor for 33 years and has been involved with the Dutchess County Board of Realtors and the Women’s Council of Realtors.

In her free time Lucille enjoys speed walking, gardening and spending time with her grandson.

When asked about her breast cancer experience Lucille said: “Life is what you make it. I feel you have to have hope and love.”

Miles of Hope is thrilled to be honoring Lucille at our 9th Annual Community Walk for Breast Cancer on Sunday October 2, 2011.
