Yesterday, at the Hits for Hope Annual Slow Pitch Softball Tournament, Lynn Alexander Nazzaro, age 42, breast cancer survivor, mother, wife, and daughter won the coveted MVP award for the tournament.

Lynn is a member of the Angels Softball Team who beat the Kingston Bombers in the finals, October 3, 2010 at the Robinson Lane Fields in Wappingers Falls. Yes, she wore pink, and yes she played first base like (more…)

American Cancer Society to host Breast Cancer Community Program

American Cancer Society logoThe American Cancer Society, Hudson Valley Region, will host a Breast Cancer Community Program Saturday, October 2, 2010 from 8AM-11AM at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Conference Room B. The program will include presentations by area physicians on the latest treatment of breast cancer and information about American Cancer Society programs and services for breast cancer patients.

The program will highlight their collaboration with Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, and Pari Forood, Executive Director, Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, will present information on the services for breast cancer patients that Miles of Hope offers.

Here at Miles of Hope, when October rolls around, we say “Happy Breast Cancer Awareness Month!” It has become a celebration in this country of all survivors and their successful treatment and all of the research and funding that has made new technology part of the cure. We salute nurses, doctors, technicians, scientists and biomedical engineers for their diligence and nurturing. And we remember with fondness and regret those who died of this terrible disease.

Welltone New Music Features Miles of Hope

Imagine the unimaginable. You find a lump in your breast. You go to the doctor and it is confirmed through testing that you have breast cancer. Now what?

According to the American Cancer Society, excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, accounting for more than 1 in 4 cancers diagnosed in the US. In 2008, there were 182,460 new cases of breast cancer in women in the United States. The 5 year relative surviWelltone New Musicval rate for breast cancer in the localized stage (cancer that has not spread to other sites in the body) is 98%. The earlier the cancer is diagnosed, the more successful the treatment.

The federal government along with private agencies and foundations spend hundreds of millions of dollars on cancer research each year and they should be commended for all of the major treatment breakthroughs in the past 25 years. However, there is still an area that is often times ignored . . .
