Hoops for Hope March 14

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Hoops for Hope is a 3 on 3 women’s charity basketball tournament that raises funds for the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation. This event will take place on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at the McCann Recreation Center at Marist College in Poughkeepsie.

Each year we dedicate our efforts to honor an individual who exemplifies the spirit of our event. This year, we will play in memory of Mary Clay, who lost her battle with breast cancer in November, 2008. Mary’s work as the New York University Athletics Department Business Manager coincided directly with the great surge of women’s sports at NYU, including women’s basketball, and across the country. She worked at the university from 1980 to 2006, when she took a leave of absence to focus on her family and her health. Mary was sweet, smart and tough, and was described by many as a pleasure to work with.  Her bright smile and care left a lasting mark on the New York University community and the students she served. Mary was a long term resident of Pleasantville, Westchester County who was active in her community as well.

With Guest Coach and Miles of Hope Co-Founder Dana Effron on the bench, the Marist Women’s Basketball Team’s Pink Zone Game on February 12 in honor of breast cancer survivors, raised $1800 for the local Foundation.

“When I was asked to guest coach, I was so honored that I went out and bought a pair of hot pink Converse® high top basketball shoes,” explained Mrs. Effron. “This is the second time we have worked with Marist on this charity game directed at our cause and we are indebted to them for their generosity and community spirit.”

Cathy Varunok, Miles of Hope Co-Founder, organized the information area at the game and welcomed many of the survivors. “We came here to honor survivors and to highlight the Foundation’s mission to people who may not know what we do,” Mrs. Varunok explained. “Our Hoops for Hope Women’s Basketball Tournament is March 14, right here at this gym and we had information available in case anyone wanted to sign up. Anyone can go to our website and sign up a team to play.”

Marist Red Fox, Rachel Fitz, a Fashion Major at the college, designed the t-shirt for the night’s special event. T-shirts were given out free to the first 1000 attendees and the shirts were gone long before the start time of 7:30 PM.

“When I got here at 5:00, people were milling around the door, and by 6:00, there was a line to get in,” stated Pari Forood, Miles of Hope’s Executive Director. “By game time there were over 3,000 people and most of them were wearing pink. It was quite a sight and heartwarming for us to see this type of support and solidarity in our community.”

Through donations and a silent auction and raffle organized by Marist, the Foundation raised over $1800 for support services for people affected by breast cancer in the Hudson Valley.

“Our mission is to help the people in the 8 counties of the Hudson Valley. Marist helped us to accomplish this and they are a true partner and friend,” Ms. Forood said.

Cathy Varunok, Co-Founder of the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, and Pari Forood, Executive Director accept a donation from Felicia Hodges, Editor of the Tri-County Woman On-Line magazine.

The Break-a-thon was open to all ages and participants ranged from expert to novice.

“When we came over to thank Felicia and pick up the check, she gave us the opportunity to break a board,” explained Ms. Varunok. “Naturally we had to give it a try and now Pari and I can’t wait to do it again.”

“People from throughout the 8 counties of the Hudson Valley approach us and ask what kind of fundraiser they can do for us and I always say ‘use your imagination!’” explained Ms. Forood.

“In 2009, we received donations from: a Spin-a-thon at Spinning Classes at a northern Westchester fitness club, Manicures and Pedicures for Hope in Millbrook, and the sale of a calendar by the group Bosom Buddies, survivors who posed topless for the calendar to show that women, post surgery can still be proud of their bodies. Aside from our annual events, we received donations from salons, high school honor societies, girl scout troops, Dragon Boat races in Peekskill, Dance/Exercise programs in Poughkeepsie, and a Fashion Show with survivors as models at the Galleria.”

“People play soccer, basketball, softball, run, sing and dance to raise money for us and we are thrilled and very very grateful,” Ms. Varunok said.
