Hoops for Hope Women’s Basketball Tournament Raises $ for Local Charity

2009

Discount designer jean company, Charity Denim, will bring designer jeans to the Rittenberg Lounge in Mather Hall at Trinity College in Hartford, CT. on Monday, May 4 from 10:30-4:00.

Trinity’s chapter of the National Sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma will host the jean company with proceeds benefiting the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation – www.milesofhope.org

Trinity Sophomore and KKG Member, Hilary Novik, organized the clothing sale to benefit this breast cancer foundation near her home.

Trinity's chapter of the National Sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma“We have an obligation to do charity work and we look forward to giving Miles of Hope a big donation to assist them in funding programs for people affected by breast cancer.”

Jeans will be on sale from brands like Hudson, Citizens of Humanity, 7 for all mankind, people’s liberation, etc.

The designer jeans on sale normally cost between $140 and $200 retail. Their reduced price tags range from $45 and $85 at the sale. For each pair sold, $5 will be donated to Miles of Hope.

“This program is a unique way to support our philanthropy, while offering people an opportunity to purchase brand new jeans at discounted prices,” Novik said.

“College students like to look nice, and it is even better to support a good cause at the same time,” President and founder of Charity Denim Steve Price said.

He started the company about a year ago when he tapped into the large market of college girls who are willing to pay a fortune for a pair of the latest designer jeans. At the end of each season Charity Denim buys left over inventory directly from the manufactures, which are “happy to help out,” according to Price.

The company has been to many campuses across the country, and has also done sales in private homes. Charity Denim donates to whatever philanthropy the host decides.

Novik organized the event after hearing about it from sorority sisters in New York who have participated, and raved of its success.

“It is great to raise money for such a wonderful cause that affects people everywhere,” she said.

“What makes this different from any other philanthropy on campus is that you don’t have to buy a ticket or form teams, and you can come and go when you want,” Novik added.

Hoops for Hope Women’s Basketball Tournament Raises $ for Local Charity

2009

The Hoops for Hope Women’s Basketball Tournament at Marist College unofficially raised over $23,000 for the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation. (funds are still being collected at this time) With 48 teams and 500 players it was the biggest tournament of its kind in the area. 1000 spectators came to watch their moms, sisters, daughters and friends as the competition was fierce and friendly all at the same time. Live Action was covered on channel 18 local cable news.

The annual tournament allows women of all ages and abilities the opportunity to play basketball in a competitive or less challenging arena depending on their choice of division.

“We had former high school and college players as well as women who haven’t played in years competing in separate divisions this year,” explained Maureen Seipp, chairman of the event.

“We accommodate all levels and abilities – everyone can play and have a good time,” she added

“Hoops helps us highlight the importance of exercise and staying in shape as good for the body and the mind. Friendly competition of this type is a natural stress reliever. Everyone smiles on the court no matter how spirited and that makes the whole day fun and rewarding,” said Cathy Varunok, Foundation Co-Founder.

The Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation is a 501-c-3 non-profit public charity with a mission to fund support services for people affected by breast cancer in the Hudson Valley, NY.

Hoops for Hope Women’s Basketball Tournament March 15

2009

Sunday, March 15, 2009 marks the day for the 4th annual Hoops for Hope Women’s Basketball Tournament benefiting the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation.

The tournament will be held at Marist College at 9:00 a.m. using 10 half courts for 3 on 3 competitions. Forty teams will participate. Spectators are welcome.

Foundation Founder Cathy Varunok said: “All of the sports competitions that we sponsor are designed to be a friendly message emphasizing the benefits of exercise to all women. Goals for Hope Women’s Soccer Tournament in August and this basketball tournament are not about winning or losing, but about participating and recognizing that we can be proactive about our health.”

Tournament Chairman Maureen Seipp remembers playing basketball in high school as a highlight of her adolescence: “I always loved basketball and the camaraderie with my teammates and I have missed it since high school. With this tournament we have attracted everyone from former college players to basketball moms who are tired of sitting on the sidelines. Most have a connection to breast cancer and they are either playing in honor or memory of a loved one or friend.”

This year Miles of Hope honors Mary Ann Leddy, mother of a staunch Miles of Hope volunteer Shannon Leddy, and a 25 year survivor of breast cancer. Mary Ann was diagnosed at a time when medical technology and programs were not as advanced as they are now and survival was not an automatic outcome. She too is a fighter and an inspiration to us all, raising a family, volunteering in her community and reminding us that nutrition and exercise – taking care of yourself – are key components to a long and healthy life.

The Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity with a mission to fund support services for people affected by breast cancer in the Hudson Valley, NY.
