The 2012 Hoops for Hope Women’s Basketball Tournament was held on Saturday, March 10, 2012, at the McCann Recreation Center at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, and by every measure was a rousing success.
Hoops for Hope is the annual 3 on 3 women’s charity basketball tournament that raises funds for the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation.
Each year we dedicate our efforts to honor an individual who exemplifies the spirit of our event. For 2012, Hoops for Hope was held in honor of 12 year breast cancer survivor and long time volunteer Cathi DeLeon. Cathi lives in the Dutchess County town of LaGrange with her husband Raoul. She has 2 grown children. When she is not running the concession stand at Hoops for Hope or captaining the Breast Cancer Boat at the Dragon Boat races every summer at Peekskill Days Celebration, or helping at other Miles of Hope events, she works at the Vail Farm Elementary School in the Arlington Central School District as an Administrative Assistant to the Principal.
Hoops for Hope allows women of all ages and abilities the opportunity to play basketball in a competitive or less challenging arena depending on their choice of division.
The 2011 tournament raised over $40,000 for the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation. With 48 teams and 500 players it was the biggest tournament of its kind in the area. Five hundred spectators came to cheer on their moms, sisters, daughters and friends. See photos of the 2011 tournament.
Photo and Video Contests
The winning photo, selected from the entries by Facebook fans, was taken by Marist College student Lindsey Sacco, who will graduate with an undergraduate degree in Public Relations/Advertising this spring. The photo is of our wonderful volunteers at the Miles of Hope merchandise table, and includes colorful t-shirt pictures.
Brian Howard volunteered to produced a new Hoops for Hope video. His video was the only submission, so he is the winner of the video contest.
Congratulations! Both winners get a "bag of Hope" filled with Miles of Hope merchandise.
