The 13th annual Goals for Hope Women’s Soccer Tournament will be held on Monday, August 1, 2016, at Stringham Park in LaGrangeville, NY [map]. |
Goals for Hope raises funds for the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation. Every penny raised is used to help those in need in our community!
This day is designed to be a friendly competition, emphasizing the benefits of exercise to all women and the importance of helping those who need assistance. The Goals for Hope Women’s Soccer Tournament is not about winning or losing, but about participating and recognizing that we can be proactive about our health, while supporting our community.
Details will be published as soon as they are available. Meantime please enjoy photos from last year’s event.

Goals for Hope Honoree
Karen Shogren is always willing to give of herself to help others. This kind, humble, remarkable woman is our 2015 Goals for Hope Honoree! She is the youngest of five siblings, a wife to Mark, and mom to Addison, Clark and Miriam. Karen is a soccer player, a soccer coach, a soccer club president, a soccer referee, an East Hudson Youth Soccer League age-group director, and a Goals for Hope participant and volunteer! In her spare time, Karen also works for Taconic Retreat and Conference Center, and volunteers for her church. She, her husband, and daughter will be going on an international trip to support missionaries this summer.
In 2009, Karen was diagnosed with breast cancer. Going through chemotherapy, radiation and multiple surgeries barely slowed this super woman down! Karen continued on with her busy life, further inspiring all of those around her.
What is Goals for Hope?
Several long-time friends, who have played soccer together in the Hudson Valley for more than two decades, wanted to do something special for their community.
Judy Rose was the first to decide to reach out, and she got her women’s team involved in several soccer events and fundraising tournaments. After witnessing the success of others, she quickly convinced Rose Greene and Mary Darcy Schanz that they could undertake something equally as exciting. They just needed a meaningful purpose.
It all began to come together in June 2003, when Mary was speaking to Cathy Varunok (co-founder of Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation) about their ideas for a soccer tournament. Mary had recently lost a close family friend, Rhoda Post, to a long battle with breast cancer. Cathy knew Rhoda and was affected by her death as well. The idea struck them almost simultaneously. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if this women’s soccer team hosted their own tournament, for the benefit of Cathy’s newly formed foundation? (www.milesofhope.org)
The idea quickly caught on. In no time, Judy, Mary and Rose were joined by Nikole Seipp, Mary Jo Levins, Maureen Darcy, Trish Darcy Silverman, Cathy Varunok and Miles of Hope to form the backbone of Goals for Hope.
The tournament became a quick success, bringing in teams from all over the NY area, and Connecticut and NJ. The founding committee members chose to honor a special person(s) each year, who had a significant connection to the soccer world. One honoree, Margaret DeSa, joined the committee in 2004. Eventually bringing her daughters, Tina and Julie along, the DeSa’s helped take the event to another level in many special ways. After ten meaningful years, some committee members decided to retire after selflessly giving of themselves. Still strong, Goals for Hope enjoyed another influx of talented women from 2013 – 2015. Amanda Tierney brought her organizational talents and soccer knowledge to the group and joined Mary as co-chairwoman. Mary’s daughter, Haleigh Schanz, joined by Michele Mahoney, Deb Violaris, Mary Morrison, and Jessica Waldorf came on board with enthusiasm. These compassionate, dedicated women united with Mary Darcy Schanz, Maureen Darcy, Trish Darcy Silverman, and Julie DeSa Rousseau in establishing what is currently known as the “GFH Committee”
