The Hoops for Hope tournament was amazing! Thank you everyone!
Six people entered the Hoops for Hope Photo Contest. Click to see all the photos. An impartial jury selected one photo from each set of photos, and posted them in a special photo album on Facebook. Facebook fans voted by “liking” one photo each.
The winning photo was taken by Lindsey Sacco, a Marist College student who will graduate with an undergraduate degree in Public Relations/Advertising this spring. The photo was of our wonderful volunteers at the Miles of Hope merchandise table, and included colorful t-shirt pictures.
Brian Howard volunteered to produced a new Hoops for Hope video. His video was the only submission, so he won the video contest.
Congratulations! Both winners get a “bag of Hope” filled with Miles of Hope merchandise.
Come One Come All to the Basketball Event of the Season! You have heard of soccer moms and hockey moms but no one beats basketball moms for their tenacity and competitive spirit!
The tournament will be held at Marist College McCann Arena [map] using 10 half courts for 3 on 3 competitions. Forty teams are expected to participate; spectators are welcome.
“The women participating in this tournament range from former UCONN all-stars to moms inspired by their athletic children!” explained Pari Forood, Executive Director of Miles of Hope. “It is a fun day with everyone benefiting from exercise in the bleak mid-winter. I urge any and all women who are bored with the treadmill at the gym to come play basketball with us and register a team on line at milesofhope.org.”

Foundation Co-Founder Cathy Varunok said: “All of the sports competitions that we sponsor are designed to be a friendly message emphasizing the benefits of exercise to all women. Goals for Hope Women’s Soccer Tournament in August and this basketball tournament are not about winning or losing but about participating and recognizing that we can be proactive about our health.”
Tournament Co-Chairman Shannon Leddy has helped run the tournament since Hoops for Hope honored her mother in 2010. “I have been involved with Miles of Hope since its inception,” Ms. Leddy explained, “but they really stole my heart when they honored my mother, a 25 year breast cancer survivor.”
Maureen Seipp, Tournament Co-Chairman, remembers playing basketball in high school as a highlight of her adolescence: “I always loved basketball and the camaraderie with my teammates and I have missed it since high school. With this tournament we have attracted everyone from former college players to basketball moms who are tired of sitting on the sidelines. Most have a connection to breast cancer and they are either playing in honor or memory of a loved one or friend.”
Each year Hoops for Hope is dedicated to an individual who exemplifies the spirit of our event. This year’s Honoree is 12 year breast cancer survivor and Miles of Hope volunteer, Cathi DeLeon. Cathi lives in the Dutchess County town of LaGrange with her husband Raoul. She has 2 grown children. When she is not running the concession stand at Hoops for Hope or captaining the Breast Cancer Boat at the Dragon Boat races every summer at Peekskill Days Celebration, or helping at other Miles of Hope events, she works at the Vail Farm Elementary School in the Arlington Central School District as an Administrative Assistant to the Principal.

The Hoops for Hope Women’s Basketball Tournament at Marist College raised over $40,000 for the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation. With 48 teams and 500 players it was the biggest tournament of its kind in the area. 500 spectators came to watch their moms, sisters, daughters and friends as the competition was fierce and friendly all at the same time. Live Action was covered on channel 18 local cable news.
The annual tournament allows women of all ages and abilities the opportunity to play basketball in a competitive or less challenging arena depending on their choice of division.
“We had former high school and college players as well as women who haven’t played in years competing this year,” explained Maureen Seipp, Chairman of the event. “We accommodate all levels and abilities — everyone can play and have a good time,” she added
“Hoops helps us highlight the importance of exercise and staying in shape as good for the body and the mind. Friendly competition of this type is a natural stress reliever. Everyone smiles on the court no matter how spirited and that makes the whole day fun and rewarding,” said Cathy Varunok, Foundation Co-Founder.
This year’s tournament was dedicated to sisters Lisa DeCicco and Gina DeCicco Salituro. “We honored Lisa in her triumph as we remember a source of her strength and inspiration, her sister Gina. We are recognizing two wives, mothers, daughters, friends, sisters,” explained Maureen Seipp, Tournament Chairman.

This year’s Hoops for Hope Event will be uniquely dedicated to sisters Lisa DeCicco and Gina DeCicco Salituro. We will honor Lisa in her triumph as we remember a source of her strength and inspiration, her sister Gina. We are recognizing two wives, mothers, daughters, friends, sisters.
Anyone who ever met Gina was immediately drawn to her effervescent personality. Gina fought cancer everyday but she never let it win over her life. With her positive attitude and endearing laugh, she lived every day bravely and taught us the power of positive thinking. She was a friend unlike any other. Sadly, she passed in May of 2008. Aunt Lisa, as she is affectionately known, is a special, trusted friend, an everyday role model for many. She has stepped into the lives of Gina’s children with love and memories while continuing to teach them the importance of celebrating the joys of life. Her zest for living is evident in all that she does. Not only is Lisa special to her friends and family, but she is well respected and admired by her colleagues. Lisa has spent her career serving the YWCA where she presently holds the position of VP of Operations Administration & H.R.
These are two extraordinary women, both diagnosed with breast cancer and both battled courageously. Two remarkable lives. Two true role models in the fight against Breast Cancer. We are so happy to have the opportunity to celebrate their lives with you.
We will be printing a “Spirit” book for the event and would love for you to share your thoughts, experiences, memories and cheers with all of our participants.

“We had a fantastic time! You guys did a great job running the fundraiser. Everything was so well organized and ran so smoothly from our perspective. Loved how the girls were going around selling the raffle tickets and selling the fruit throughout the stands. We will definitely participate again next year.”

Each year we dedicate our efforts to honor an individual who exemplifies the spirit of our event. This year, we will play in memory of Mary Clay, who lost her battle with breast cancer in November, 2008. Mary’s work as the New York University Athletics Department Business Manager coincided directly with the great surge of women’s sports at NYU, including women’s basketball, and across the country. She worked at the university from 1980 to 2006, when she took a leave of absence to focus on her family and her health. Mary was sweet, smart and tough, and was described by many as a pleasure to work with. Her bright smile and care left a lasting mark on the New York University community and the students she served. Mary was a long term resident of Pleasantville, Westchester County who was active in her community as well.
