Family Fun Run Honoree Diane White’s Story

2013

Diane White has been named the honoree for the 2013 Family Fun Run. Here is her story.

I appreciate being named the honoree for the Family Fun Run this year. As a matter of fact this is the first race that I ran in 2011 after finishing all my medical treatments only one week prior to the race. This race has special meaning for me even though I have run many races since my diagnosis.

I was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer October 2010,the same week I celebrated my 25th wedding anniversary (Oct. 12). I immediately sought a game plan for treatment. My husband and I were going on a cruise at the end of November. My doctor understood my need to get on with my life. I had surgery right away, then I had a port installed. I had enough time to heal so that I could enjoy my vacation. I met with my oncologist and radiologist also. As soon as I got back from vacation, chemo treatments would begin. I didn’t want to waste any time. When chemo ended, then radiation treatments began. I was finished with everything by Easter of 2011.

If it seems that I was in a rush to put this diagnosis behind me, I was! At the time, my daughter was a senior in high school, going through the college application process. My son was a junior in college at the time. I didn’t want my breast cancer diagnosis interfering with their lives any more than necessary.

Anyway, I guess I should tell you that I’m a Teaching Assistant at South Avenue Elementary School in Beacon. I love my job. I’ve been there for 15 years. My co-workers were fantastic while I went through my “ordeal”. I worked throughout my treatments. It wasn’t easy but I did it. The students were great also. They thought my hats were cool!

I have tell you that my husband Jim was my rock through everything. Even when I insisted on running during my treatments. Sometimes my running was slow! He knew I needed to stay sane and grounded. It wasn’t always easy trying feel normal but I tried. My kids were also great through everything. My son is 23 and my daughter will be 20 very soon. It wasn’t easy always easy for them to deal with my illness.

So from April of 2011 to May of 2012 everything started to feel normal again. I felt stronger eveyday. My hair grew back. I started to feel like me again.

My daughter graduated high school and was headed to college. My son was entering senior year of college. The year went great. Then in May of 2012 my doctor felt a lymph node that didn’t seem right. I had a biopsy. It was cancerous, again (recurrence). I couldn’t believe it was happening again. I then had a complete auxiliary dissection of the lymph nodes in my arm. Then radiation. Once again, I’m done, it’s behind me.

I’m not very good at talking about this stuff and calling myself a survivor. I just like to put my music on and go for a run. That’s my own personal way deal with stuff.

I have an appointment for my mammo and ultrasound on May 17. I plan on leaving that appointment with a smile on my face knowing that it’s all behind me!

Happy running,

Diane White
