Historic Carmel High School in Putnam County
Carmel, New York is the county seat of Putnam County, NY, a community dedicated to the support and services for those in the area affected by breast cancer. Named after the American war hero Israel Putnam, the county lies in the lower Hudson Valley region, serving the greater New York Metropolitan area and sharing breast cancer resources and events with its neighboring counties.
A thriving and affluent community, Putnam County is home to sprawling hilly terrain and reservoirs, as well as charming hamlets and small towns such as Carmel. Known for its historic courthouse and high school, Carmel lies on the southern border of the county and remains an active community with central access to neighboring areas of the Hudson Valley.
Breast cancer awareness and outreach is an important part of the Carmel community. Organizations like Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation were founded to help reach out to people affected by breast cancer in Carmel and the rest of Putnam County, as well as the surrounding Hudson Valley region. Established in March of 2004, Miles of Hope has sought to fund breast cancer programs and support services by holding annual events that benefit Putnam County as well as the other seven counties of New York’s Hudson Valley region: Ulster, Dutchess, Greene, Columbia, Rockland, Westchester, and Orange.Miles of Hope puts on six major fund-raising events every year throughout the area:
Many smaller, independent fund-raisers are held for Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation throughout the year — some one-time events and some annual events. These are listed in the Miles of Hope event calendar, posted on the blog, and announced by email (sign up for email announcements). Many events are in Putnam County or within easy driving distance. Miles of Hope fund-raisers are held throughout the year to support people with breast cancer in Putnam County and all eight Hudson Valley counties.
Carmel has access to state-of-the-art treatment and support facilities. Located in Carmel itself is the Putnam Hospital Center, which is home to the Wagner Cancer Pavilion, providing comprehensive diagnosis and treatment by a team of board-certified specialists and medical staff. The Cancer Services Program of Putnam County also ensures that those that are uninsured or underinsured can get access to screenings and essential diagnostic care at facilities in the area.
We fund — partner with — Putnam County Community Action partnership to deliver the Medical Gap Care Program to residents of Putnam County and all eight counties of the Hudson Valley. The Medical Gap Care Fund helps people in treatment for breast cancer deal with a financial emergency.
